NoraNora began her artistic exploration as a child, immersing herself in the world of creative expression in its many forms. While attending Parsons School of Design in New York City, she began to mix and apply paint by hand to the canvas, finding that such direct contact between the artist and the surface allowed for an intensifying of the creative flow. After graduating in 2002 with her BFA in Fine Arts, Nora began her graduate work at John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, CA where her work matured via an organic evolution. After graduating with her MFA, Nora returned to New York City, and in 2007 joined 121 Ludlow, where she continues to experiment and evolve. Ms. Cohen’s paintings make reference to the body, to the mythical and archetypal, to the inner landscape and to the macroscopic/microscopic all without preconceived intention. Executed via an unmediated automatic process, Cohen’s paintings bring about the return to a childlike mind, unencumbered and directly connected to a sense of wonder. The artist finds her source in both the personal and collective unconscious, touching on truth that is unknowable by the rational mind.  Nora Cohen’s work explores and manifests mystery itself, without the search for answers.
