Winston I do not make feminist art.
I do not make art for only women to understand or appreciate.
I am influenced by outsider art, typography and found objects.
I like to start with an image in my mind and eliminating all unessential elements until what I am looking for emerges.
I will not paint a whole building if only one window interests me.
I like to skim an entire book if I can come away with one passage to inspire me.
I use typography as both an element of form as well as texture.
The shape of letters interests me as much as, and at times more than, what they say. By taking a sentence out of context and time I open it up to interpretation.  It becomes, over time, unimportant why I originally chose it and more important how each viewer relates to “the statement”.
I am fascinated by the human mind’s ability to build a story around very little visual information.
If a fold or crease forms in my canvas I allow it to become a part of the piece.
I want my paintings to have the subtle soft glow of an old book.
The feeling of something from nothing, like a sketch on a coffee stained napkin.
I view my work as a found object.
I no longer erase each pencil mark or charcoal smudge.
I enhance my lines with pen and marker.
I want line and three dimensional form to co-exist.
I will let my paintings grow out of themselves over time.
